Cambodia was crazy fun! I'm really sorry for getting you all so worried.. I really have nothing to say to defend myself.. I promise that I will not do anything like that ever again.. sorry Cambodia was very eye-opening. It's a country that is much less developed than any other city that I've been to before. I know.. I'm spoiled. I've only gone to all very highly industrialized cities.. and I figured that Cambodia is as good as any country to start actually SEEing the world~ It was there, that I got a lot of clutter that had been bothering me for the past week. We got to Changi Airport at around 4:30am~ We went to get our boarding pass only to find the Penelope's bag was too heavy to take as a carry-on~ So, her bag was taken.. the problem was that she wasn't prepared for that to happen and all her important documents to prove her identity was not with her when we needed it. They took her away for a good half-hr or more.. and I was worried to death! You know all the stories about how Singapore canes people.. I was starting to imagine that they were interrogating her as if she was a huge criminal .. good thing they didn't do anything~ Only made her retrieve her documents. Yay! This is Frank~ I'm going all Jap while travelling!! PHOTOS!! Killing time while waiting for Penelope to get back:
Penelope's safe!!
While I was reading up on what to expect from Cambodia on the sites, all the sites make it sound like they have mutated mosquitoes that will eat you up.. so I went expecting that all the mosquitoes must carry diseases and that one bite from them would be the kiss of death and I would get malaria.. >< Not true. Less mosquitoes than China. Ever since we got off a plane and into a taxi to take us to Siem Reap.. it was completely 'sensory overload' (I can't find a better way to describe it other than Mario's words). I didn't know what to say.. it was all I could do to keep up with what my eyes were seeing and not just faint. Take a look at it yourself:
The sand is everywhere.. every direction that you look is this sand.. I truly regret only wearing sandles to a place like this.. my feet were just wading through the sand.. I guess they don't have the money to fix the roads? Not very often would there be an actual sidewalk either.. Lots of children that follows you around everywhere.. children wanting you to buy things from them or just want to talk for no reason.. you know that their parents are nearby.. and they are waiting for the child to take money back to them.. What to do? You want to help the kid but yet if you give them money, there will probably be only a small fraction of it actually being used on the child.. and it will only teach the adults that are controlling the child that this way of earning a living is ok because they are still able to get money and not attempt to find another way of surviving.. yet if you don't give money to the child you don't know if the child will live till tommorrow from the hunger.. so.. what to do? In the end we just didn't talk or give any money to them. One of them managed to freak Penelope out completely ^^ We were having diner and were just sitting around. I came back from the washroom and saw a child had been standing next to her.. I just assumed that they were talking or something, but apparently Penelope had not known that there was a kid next to her and freaked her out completely~~ hahahah~~~~ Everywhere that we went we took a Touq Tous (I'm not sure if I'm spelling it right). It's basically a carriage that's pulled by a motorbike~ Some feel really unstable.. but it was fun!! The more unstable ones, Penelope and I could not stop screaming at every car that came at us and every bump in the road! The roads itself was crazy! Absolutely no rules! You can drive on whatever side of the road you want, you can drive an American steering style car or a British steering style car.. you don't have to have a license plate for the car if you don't want to, you cross large intersections by ploughing through it.. I didn't even see very many street lights! Now, imagine that you are completely exposed and had nothing more than a few metal pipes to hold on to.. which aren't even meant for you to hold onto for safety.. only meant to hold the cover up! Scary neh!! Stupid Frank and Mario found our reactions amusing >< When we had to go by foot and cross the road, that was when experience in crossing roads in China came in handy! Yeh!!! I KNEW that I risked my life that many times for a reason!
The temples are really breath-taking... Please look at the photos.. I don't even want to attempt to put things into words
We went to a Landmines Museum. It was awful. Bummed me out for most of the remaining day.. but once we got to shopping, my mood quickly lifted.. I feel horrible about that too.. but I can't help it. The Landmines Museum is ran by a sole man. It is not the typical museum within a nice building and air-con and charges an obscene amount for entry. It's outdoors and it's at the end of a really long dusty bumpy rocky road. Entry is only by donation. This man dedicates his life to removing the landmines that have been scattered all over Cambodia during the war that took place for a decade and only ceased fire in 1998. It takes UN $500 US to remove one land-mine. He takes out 3 an hour and does not have any pay. The area around the museum is where all the children and people that have been affected by the land-mines live. Everywhere you see people that are missing limbs, yet they are really happy and smiley more sincerely than a lot of people that i know.. Add me on Face Book if you want to see all the pics (name is Barbara Tang)!!! Xanga is totally pissing me off!! grrrrrrrr.. takes FOREVER to upload one picture ... I can't wait till Phillipines trip!! ----- Shouts to Vancouvereans: Agnes = You are absolutely the BESTEST friend a girl can ever hope for! I was so afraid of your reaction and rather than getting pissed at me you gave me support AND confirmation!! It was exactly what I needed.. I can't imagine if you weren't there what I might have done.. Stevie = Thx for.. just everything. I dont' even know where to begin. Seems like role reversal now.. no? hahaha~~ Must take me out more often after I get back!! John Gor = You're a dope! Jess = Sorry~~ sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry !! my number is (65) 90978266.. I promise to do everything in my power to not worry you again!! |
